On October 15, 2026, a manipulated video of Washington County chair candidate Nafisa Fai circulated widely on the social media platform X. The 26-second clip, which appeared just hours before a scheduled candidates forum, falsely depicted Fai speaking in front of an upside-down American flag to incite political backlash.
What happened
The viral video originated from an account on X called “End Wokeness,” which shared the clip with a caption claiming Fai was speaking at a rally in Minnesota and questioning her patriotism. The post garnered significant attention, leading to comments suggesting Fai should be deported. The video was subsequently reposted by several high-profile accounts, including Benny Johnson, Lara Logan, U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, and Blaze Media.
In reality, the footage was a selectively edited version of a speech Fai gave at a community event in Minnesota the previous weekend. Attendees and video evidence confirmed that the American flags at the event were displayed correctly. The original speech focused on themes of hard work and career ambition, with Fai encouraging young people to pursue their dreams. The manipulated version spliced together specific English phrases from her speech to alter the context of her message. Fai, who immigrated to the United States from Somalia as a teenager, expressed that the questioning of her loyalty to the country was the most difficult aspect of the incident. The impact of the disinformation was immediate; at a forum in Hillsboro that same evening, Fai was confronted by a voter who believed the fabricated video was authentic.
