A verified Instagram fan account recently posted a counterfeit, AI-generated image of actress Mia Goth, leading to widespread confusion and false reporting by mainstream media outlets. The image, which depicted Goth wearing a shirt with the message MY EX IS MY BIGGEST FAN, was shared alongside a song choice that suggested a public comment on her recent divorce filing.

What happened

The post originated from @miagoth_, a verified fan account boasting over a million followers. Despite the account being labeled as a fan page, the image was treated as a genuine selfie by some media outlets, including People, which initially reported on the shirt as a real fashion choice made by the actress. Goth’s representative, Christine Tripicchio, confirmed that the image was entirely AI-generated and emphasized that Goth does not maintain any social media presence.

Tripicchio criticized Instagram for granting a verification badge to an account that disseminates forged content, calling the platform's prioritization of such material over the protection of a public figure's likeness incomprehensible. The actress's team had previously filed multiple complaints with Instagram to have the account removed. Following the incident, Meta confirmed that the account was eventually removed for impersonating a public figure. This event highlights the ongoing challenges platforms face in distinguishing between authentic content and AI-generated fabrications, as well as the risks posed when verified accounts are used to spread misinformation about celebrities.
