While the athlete had previously held such a flag during an FC Barcelona championship parade in May 2026, verification efforts confirmed the World Cup-related image was a digital fabrication.

What happened

The misleading content, which appeared on July 20, 2026, was identified as synthetic through multiple detection methods. OpenAI’s image verification tool detected a SynthID—an invisible watermark embedded by Google for AI-generated media—within the file. Additionally, the media authentication tool Unsurface identified forensic traces indicating the image was likely AI-generated.

Reverse image searches compared the viral graphic against the original, unedited photograph captured by Getty Images and other media outlets. These legitimate photos show Yamal celebrating on the pitch in New Jersey wearing a Spain jersey inscribed with "Campeones" on the back, with no flag present. The fabricated image exploited the player's real-world history of public support for Palestine to lend credibility to the deepfake, which spread rapidly across multiple languages and platforms following Spain's second-ever World Cup win.
