In October 2026, a fabricated campaign poster featuring an AI-generated image of Labour leader Chris Hipkins and former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern circulated on social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The image falsely claimed that the Labour party intended to appoint Ardern as the next governor-general if they won the upcoming November 2026 general election.

What happened

The deceptive post, which appeared on Instagram on October 9, 2026, featured text stating, "I will appoint Dame Jacinda Ardern as NZ's next Governor-General." The Labour party officially refuted the claim, confirming that no such campaign material originated from their party channels. A spokesperson for Ardern noted that she and her family had moved to Australia earlier in 2026, further undermining the credibility of the political appointment claim. Technical analysis using Google's SynthID detector confirmed the image contained a watermark identifying it as a product of AI generation tools. The incident occurred during a period of heightened political tension in New Zealand, as voters expressed concerns over the cost of living ahead of the November 7 election. While the post spurred negative reactions from some social media users, the Labour leader's office confirmed to AFP on October 21 that the claims were entirely false.
