On July 21, 2026, ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Kate Ceberano encountered a synthetic social media post that featured a hyper-realistic deepfake of herself appearing tearful. The singer expressed significant distress upon discovering her likeness had been manipulated to create a false narrative regarding the death of actor Sam Neill.
What happened
The deepfake was published by a Facebook page titled Golden Era Hollywood, which maintains a following of over 330,000 users. The post included an AI-generated image of Ceberano holding a phone, displaying a photo of herself embracing Sam Neill. The accompanying caption falsely claimed that Ceberano was mourning a final photograph taken during Neill's last public appearance.
While Ceberano and Neill were genuine friends who had posed together at the ARIA Hall of Fame Awards in June—an event Ceberano had previously honored with a legitimate tribute—the AI post exploited this real-world connection to manufacture emotional engagement. The synthetic content successfully misled hundreds of commenters who left messages of support, believing the post to be a genuine expression of grief. Ceberano publicly criticized the manipulation, stating that she felt violated by the experience and warning that reality is increasingly being manipulated through such technology. As of the report, the operators of the Facebook page had not responded to requests for comment.
