In June 2026, amid a chaotic Real Madrid presidential campaign, José Mourinho reportedly claimed that a video used by president Florentino Pérez to announce his arrival at the club was created using artificial intelligence. The incident occurred as Pérez and challenger Enrique Riquelme engaged in a highly contentious election battle.
What happened
Florentino Pérez had previously stated in an interview with AS that Mourinho had been signed to the club. This announcement was reinforced by a video shared on social media, which featured a person appearing to be Mourinho wearing Real Madrid gear and openly endorsing Pérez’s candidacy.
According to a report from the Portuguese newspaper Record, Mourinho sought to clarify the situation with Benfica, the club with which he remains under contract. He reportedly informed Benfica that the social media announcement was unauthorized and that the video was generated using AI technology. Mourinho maintained that he had not communicated any intention to leave his current position at Benfica. The incident added further instability to an already turbulent election campaign, which had also recently seen Erling Haaland’s camp publicly deny false reports regarding his potential transfer to the club.
