Following a 2-1 derby defeat for Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Köln utilized social media to provoke former youth player Jens Castrop. The club posted edited content on Instagram and TikTok that featured an AI-generated image of the injured midfielder.

What happened

After Mönchengladbach lost to their rivals at RheinEnergieStadion, FC Köln initiated an online spat targeting Castrop, who is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury. The club shared a post contrasting a photo of their goalscorer, Side El Malla, with an AI-generated image of Castrop. In the AI-generated depiction, Castrop was shown with a Kölsch beer bottle in his mouth while using a remote control to flip channels. The post included the English caption, "There is...such a big difference between us," and a direct message asking if Castrop should stop using TikTok so frequently.

This digital provocation was part of an ongoing rivalry between the two players and their respective clubs. Castrop responded to the mockery by commenting on the Instagram post, stating that the club's media team was better than its football team. On TikTok, he further challenged the club by writing, "If you want to take me back, just say so." The incident highlights the growing use of generative AI by sports organizations to create provocative content for social media engagement during high-stakes rivalries.
