Following the capture of the historic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon by Israeli forces, a fabricated image began circulating on social media claiming to show soldiers planting flags atop the fortress. The image, which spread rapidly across Facebook, was identified as AI-generated content rather than a genuine photograph of the site.
What happened
On June 1, 2026, a post in the Burmese language featured an image of a castle with soldiers raising an Israeli flag alongside a green banner, accompanied by text claiming the occupation of the UNESCO-listed Crusader-era site. While Israeli forces did capture Beaufort Castle—also known as Qalaat al-Chakif—on May 31, 2026, the viral image did not accurately represent the location.
Independent analysis and verification tools confirmed the image was manipulated. AFP identified several visual inconsistencies within the graphic, such as a blurry soldier and a green flag that did not match the specific green and yellow colors of the Israel Defense Forces' Golani Brigade. Furthermore, the architecture of the castle in the fabricated image failed to match genuine photos and geotagged imagery of Beaufort Castle, which features different turret and window details. The Hive Moderation detection tool also analyzed the file and concluded that it was likely generated by artificial intelligence.
