On August 27, 2026, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) issued a formal statement dismissing a viral video that depicted the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, making partisan political statements. The military leadership confirmed that the footage was an artificial intelligence-generated fabrication that did not originate from the Chief of Defence Staff.
What happened
The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, identified the video as a calculated attempt to deceive the public and misrepresent the official position of the CDS. According to the DHQ, the AI-generated manipulation was specifically designed to bring the Armed Forces of Nigeria into disrepute by falsely attributing political commentary to its leadership.
In response to the incident, the DHQ emphasized that the Armed Forces remain a professional, apolitical, and non-partisan institution committed to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Maj.-Gen. Uba condemned the creation and circulation of the synthetic media, warning those responsible—and those knowingly amplifying the content—to cease their activities immediately. The military has urged the public to disregard the fabricated video and rely exclusively on information disseminated through official channels, including their verified accounts on Facebook, WhatsApp, X, Instagram, and YouTube. The DHQ reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces against such digital threats.
