Frontman Grian Chatten recently revealed that the band Fontaines D.C. was entirely unaware that artificial intelligence had been utilized in the production of the music video for their single Marianne. The discovery prompted the band to take immediate action to ensure such unauthorized use of technology does not recur in their creative projects.

What happened

The issue came to light when the band discovered that the music video for Marianne credited AI artists, a detail that had not been communicated to the group, their management, or their record label. Upon learning of the inclusion, Chatten contacted his management team to confirm the situation, expressing significant frustration regarding the lack of transparency. According to Chatten, the use of AI occurred somewhere within the workflow of the VFX team, which involved over 100 contributors.

Chatten described the incident as ironic and contradictory, noting that the band’s recent work explores themes of social collapse and an increased dependence on technology. In response to the unauthorized use of these tools, the band has updated their future contracts to explicitly prohibit the use of AI in their music videos. Chatten has publicly stated that he does not condone the use of AI in creative circles, arguing that the technology threatens human expression.
