State Representative Dave Severin, a Republican from Benton, recently addressed a deceptive AI-generated image circulating on social media that falsely suggested he had endorsed Governor JB Pritzker in his gubernatorial race against Darren Bailey. The incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing between authentic photography and AI-manipulated content in the public sphere.
What happened
The controversy stems from a legitimate encounter at the Du Quoin State Fair, where Representative Severin and Governor Pritzker were photographed together alongside Dan "Curly" Summers and a wrestler. The original photograph was taken after Severin helped facilitate a meeting between Summers, who raises funds for homelessness, and the Governor to discuss charitable needs.
According to Severin, an unauthorized party utilized AI technology to alter this authentic image. The modified version included fabricated elements, such as adding "thumbs up" gestures to both Severin and Pritzker and digitally manipulating the Governor's arm to appear as if it were around the Representative. This altered visual was then published on Facebook with the false claim that Severin was endorsing Pritzker for governor.
Severin emphasized that while he is accustomed to political criticism, the sophistication of these AI-generated fabrications makes it difficult for some observers to discern fact from fiction. He expressed significant concern regarding the potential for such technology to undermine public trust, noting that some individuals mistakenly believed the altered image was authentic. Beyond the immediate political implications, Severin warned that the misuse of AI poses broader risks to private industry and personal safety, while also potentially damaging the credibility of the charitable work conducted by community members like Summers.
