A viral video circulating on social media falsely depicts Bill Gates warning that water shortages could trigger a mass mortality event. The clip, which has been shared thousands of times on Facebook, uses manipulated audio and visual elements to misrepresent an interview with the tech figure.

What happened

The deepfake was created by modifying footage from an October 2025 CNBC interview where Bill Gates discussed the artificial intelligence bubble. In the original interview, the screen caption read "Bill Gates on AI Bubble," and he described AI as the "biggest technical thing ever" in his lifetime. He did not mention water shortages during that conversation.

In the altered version, the audio was replaced using AI-driven voice cloning, and lip-syncing tools were employed to make it appear as though Mr. Gates was discussing a "United States Water Reserve." The video included fabricated claims that billions of people would die by 2027, accompanied by overlaid text designed to promote this specific crypto asset. Additionally, the original screen caption from the CNBC broadcast was edited to align with the false narrative regarding water scarcity. This incident is part of a broader trend of deepfakes featuring prominent tech figures being used to promote crypto assets under the guise of urgent warnings.
