The Spanish Popular Party (PP) recently disseminated a video across social media platforms, including X, Instagram, and TikTok, that utilized artificial intelligence to generate deepfake likenesses and voices of PSOE political figures and Begoña Gómez. The content, which reached 1.6 million views on X, depicts the subjects making fabricated personal confessions regarding various controversies and accusations. While the PP leadership has defended the montage as a form of political communication and satire, the PSOE is currently evaluating potential legal actions in response to the content.
What happened
The video mimics the background, framing, and presentation of a previous recording by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The PP altered the original messaging to feature AI-generated replicas of Begoña Gómez, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, José Luis Ábalos, Leire Díez, Montse Mínguez, and Santos Cerdán. In the montage, these figures are made to utter fabricated statements about illegal commissions, real estate dealings, and other accusations, effectively converting political controversies into apparent personal admissions.
Although the video includes a small print disclaimer noting its AI creation, the PP’s use of the technology has sparked a debate regarding the boundaries of political satire and the protection of personal honor. PP spokespersons Borja Sémper and Ester Muñoz have defended the initiative, arguing that the video is clearly artificial and serves to denounce what the party characterizes as PSOE hypocrisy. Conversely, PSOE officials have condemned the video as a lamentable instrument of insult. Legal experts note that while satire is protected, the use of AI does not exempt content creators from constitutional limits regarding the protection of dignity and reputation. The PSOE’s legal services are currently reviewing the material to determine if the dissemination constitutes an illegitimate interference with the rights of those portrayed.
