In October, social media users began circulating an image claiming to show former U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, on a boat in 1985. The image, which included a timestamp of July 19, 1985, was shared across platforms like X to suggest an authentic historical moment, but it was quickly identified as a fabrication.
What happened
The image was an altered copy of a previous AI-generated hoax that had depicted Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein on a boat. Forensic analysis revealed that the boat, the background, the swimsuits, and the timestamp were identical in both versions, including a nonsensical pole feature. The newer edit replaced the original figures with faces intended to resemble the Obamas.
Beyond the technical evidence of its AI origin, the image was historically impossible. The Obamas did not meet until 1989, four years after the purported date of the photo. Furthermore, the figure identified as Michelle Obama was depicted as a young man, contradicting her actual appearance in 1985 as a student at Princeton University. The image was traced back to a parody account on X, which had a history of posting AI-generated content to amplify politically motivated rumors. The account had previously admitted to using AI tools to create deceptive imagery, including a fake depiction of an ICE officer shooting a civilian. The reuse of the boat template from the Trump-Epstein hoax highlights how AI-generated assets are being recycled and repurposed to create new, false narratives targeting public figures.
