Australian Department of Employment and Workplace Relations deepfake (Oct 2025)

Deloitte Australia provided a report to the Australian government's Department of Employment and Workplace Relations that contained errors apparently generated by AI. The report included a fabricated quote from a federal court judgment and references to nonexistent academic research papers. A revised version was published after a researcher alerted the media to the fabricated references. Deloitte agreed to refund the final installment under its contract. The report reviewed departmental IT systems’ use of automated penalties in Australia's welfare system. The revised version included a disclosure that a generative AI language system, Azure OpenAI, was used in writing the report.
