What happened

The scammers combined two distinct tactics to create a highly convincing extortion attempt. First, they utilized caller ID spoofing to display the daughter's legitimate phone number on the victim's screen, effectively bypassing the common safety habit of ignoring unknown callers. Second, they employed AI voice cloning software to simulate the daughter's voice in real time. The attackers had likely harvested a short audio clip of the daughter from a public source, such as social media, a video, or a voicemail greeting, to train the model.

During the call, after the initial voice simulation, a second individual joined the line to demand a ransom. The Boone County Sheriff's Office, which handled the case, confirmed that the daughter was never in danger and was located safely in Jefferson City, completely unaware of the incident.
