The incident involved parents receiving a call from a number they recognized as their daughter's, leading them to believe she had been kidnapped at gunpoint.

What happened

The perpetrators utilized AI-generated voice replication to mimic the daughter's voice, creating a high-stress scenario designed to coerce the parents into paying a ransom. Although the caller ID appeared legitimate, investigators determined the voice was a synthetic recreation. The parents immediately alerted the authorities, prompting a coordinated search effort. Deputies successfully located the daughter in Jefferson City, where she was found safe, unharmed, and completely unaware that her identity had been weaponized in a kidnapping hoax.

BCSD officials noted that this was the first instance of AI-voice manipulation of this nature they had encountered.
